It wasn’t always this way, of course. Toward the end of the 1940s, as much as 80% of Costa Rica’s rainforests had disappeared. Due to deforestation, around 20,000 acres of land were being destroyed annually, and by the 1990s, it had one of the worst deforestation rates in Central America. Today, however, Costa Rica is one of the greenest and most sustainable countries in the world.

Thanks to the government-led initiative, Costa Rica has reforested much of its landscape, leading to 51% of the country being covered in rainforest, 24% of which is primary forest. There’s no denying that this country is now a sustainable paradise, emphasising the power of the natural world and the good that can come from preserving it. Number Two: This is Lake Arenal

As well as this, when you get to Lake Arenal, you’ll quickly realise you’ve entered watersports heaven. Currently the largest lake in Costa Rica, Lake Arenal covers 85-square-kilometres, having tripled its size with the construction of the Arenal dam back in 1979.

Next to this lake is a vast, lush rainforest, filled with wonderful plant life and fascinating Costa Rican creatures. Birds like chestnut-mandibled toucans sing from the undergrowth, while mischievous spider monkeys swing from branch to branch. In the distance, the magnificent Arenal Volcano looms large into the sky, casting an almost mythical shadow over the surrounding landscape.

The water itself is sapphire blue and calm as a millpond. Because of its size, it’s impossible to feel inhibited when you’re on the wake.
